Product Quality

Cladco Signature composite decking boards are manufactured from a mix of FSC® certified* recycled hardwood fibres and high-grade recycled plastic, making them an environmentally friendly choice. Our ProDeck boards offer enhanced durability, along with stain and UV fade resistance, thanks to the addition of a capped polymer layer. Both board types require no sanding, varnishing or painting, providing a hard-wearing, long-lasting decking solution for years to come.

*If you require FSC® certified products, please request these when placing your order.

FAQs

Composite decking is a modern decking alternative made from a blend of materials, most commonly recycled plastic and natural hardwood fibres. Offering significantly lower maintenance than traditional timber decking, composite has become an increasingly popular choice for UK gardens and outdoor spaces.

It is available in a wide range of styles, sizes, and colours, from natural wood-inspired tones such as teak and rosewood to more contemporary options including charcoal, pewter, and platinum. Some boards, such as our Signature and ProDeck ranges, also feature dual-sided designs, allowing you to choose between a modern narrow grooved finish or a timeless natural woodgrain effect.

Composite decking is built to last for decades, with boards lasting up to 25 years or more when properly installed and maintained. Cladco Signature and ProDeck boards both come with a 10-year residential warranty, with the ProDeck warranty extendable to 15 years when fitted with a Cladco recycled plastic subframe.

The material composition of composite decking boards make them longer-lasting, lower-maintenance and lower-slip compared to traditional timber decking. See our composite vs wood decking blog post for more info.

While composite decking requires significantly less upkeep than traditional timber decking, it is not entirely maintenance-free. Cleaning is necessary to remove debris and prevent potential staining. If your decking is situated beneath overhanging trees, keep an eye out for leaves, petals, and sap that need to be cleared promptly to avoid marking the surface. Our ProDeck boards are virtually maintenance free due to their protective polymer shell.

Yes. Cladco composite decking (Signature and ProDeck) is an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional timber, made using recycled hardwood fibres and recycled polyethylene. This helps reduce landfill waste and lowers demand for virgin materials, such as freshly cut timber, which contributes to deforestation and negative environmental impact if not responsibly managed.

FSC® certified versions of our composite decking are also available at no additional cost. Just let us know when placing your order if you require FSC® certified boards.

Composite decking boards typically cost between £10 and £50, depending on the specification. Several factors influence the price, including board size, the materials used, whether the boards are solid or hollow core, and whether they are capped or uncapped.

This wide price range makes composite decking suitable for both budget‑conscious projects and those seeking a premium finish. At the more affordable end, composite boards, such as our Signature decking, are often comparable in price to timber decking while offering lower maintenance. Higher‑end options, like ProDeck, may feature a polymer‑capped outer shell, providing enhanced protection against colour fade, deterioration, and the elements.

Neither hollow nor solid composite decking boards are inherently better. The right choice depends on how and where the decking will be used. Hollow core boards should not be considered a negative and are a perfectly suitable option for many installations. For seating areas and general outdoor use, hollow core decking can provide a durable, long‑lasting surface.

Solid decking boards are required for certain applications. They are more suitable where additional strength and rigidity are needed and must be used when installing steps, as they provide greater load‑bearing capacity. For raised decks that require balustrades, solid core boards should also be used to ensure fixings can be secured safely.

Yes, you can. Composite decking can be installed as a DIY project, provided you have a basic level of experience and product knowledge. The installation process is very similar to timber decking, and composite boards are just as straightforward to work with. If you’ve installed decking before, many of the steps will be familiar, and standard woodworking tools can be used to cut boards to size.

If you need guidance at any stage, support is available. Our team is on hand via live chat, email or phone, and installation guides for each product range can be found in our Help & Advice section.

You can install Cladco composite decking on a recycled plastic, composite or timber subframe. That said, we recommend that both our Signature and ProDeck boards are installed on a recycled plastic subframe. For ProDeck our extended 15-year warranty is accessed when a recycled plastic framework is used.

Yes, composite decking boards do require gaps. Gaps allow the boards to expand and contract as outside temperatures change, helping to prevent warping or damage. They also allow rainwater to drain away, rather than pooling on the surface of the decking.

It’s important that gaps are neither too small nor too large, as excessive spacing can affect the appearance of your deck. The required gap size is not universal and will vary depending on the decking range being installed. Before fitting your boards, always refer to the manufacturer’s installation guides, which specify the correct spacing.

And incorrect gaps aren’t the only thing that can trip people up. For more advice, see our Most Common Decking Installation Pitfalls blog.

Full details are available on our terms & conditions page.

Composite decking provides good grip and is generally safer than timber, even in wet conditions. Cladco Signature and ProDeck boards are slip-tested, with the grooved side offering the best traction for steps, walkways and high-traffic areas.

A small amount of colour fade is normal as the natural wood fibres in composite decking react to UV exposure during the first few months. This early lightening of colour soon settles, leaving a stable, consistent shade that lasts for years with only minimal maintenance. See our article on composite colour fading for a more detailed discussion.

Decking boards can warm up in direct sunlight, but they won’t usually become too hot to walk on. The colour you choose plays a big part too. Lighter shades, such as light grey or quartz, tend to stay cooler, while darker tones naturally absorb more heat. If your decking is in a particularly sunny spot, opting for a lighter colour or adding some shaded areas can help keep the surface comfortable throughout the day.

Its ease of maintenance is one of the key reasons composite decking remains so popular. Unlike timber, it doesn’t require sanding, staining or annual treatment. How often you clean your deck will depend on its location. Exposed decks should only need occasional cleaning, while those under trees may require more frequent attention.

Loose debris can be removed with a soft-bristle brush, and for deeper cleaning, warm water and a mild detergent applied with a cloth or stiff broom will usually suffice. You can also use a purpose‑made composite decking cleaner for the best results. Many composite boards can be pressure-washed, but always follow the manufacturer’s aftercare guidance and recommended pressure.

If you want to learn more about pressure washing decking, read our guide here.
