About Our Fibre Cement Backer Boards

If you’re looking for a reliable alternative to ply or plasterboard, especially in areas exposed to heat or moisture, Cladco multipurpose fibre cement backer boards are ideal for the job. Made from a versatile fibre cement material (cement mixed with cellulose fibres), they’re a stable, exterior-grade option for projects across walls, ceilings and floors.

They are perfect for covering porous or uneven areas and creating a stable, level surface, particularly when preparing for tiling. Suitable for use on ceilings, floors or walls, they’re a practical alternative to ply or plasterboard where durability and performance matter.

With an A1 fire rating and resistance to mould and water, these boards are well-suited to water-prone areas and can even be used around fireplaces. They’re a preferred backer option for many applications where you need a strong, level surface to work from.

Benefits of Cladco Fibre Cement Boards

  • Resistant to moisture and mould damage
  • Exterior grade backer material
  • Fire-rated A1 certification
  • Excellent for heating installations
  • High load-bearing when compared to plasterboard

We recommend contacting a professional before performing any construction work.

Cladco construction board is independently tested to achieve a 60-minute fire resistance rating for internal wall applications. Fire resistance results apply to 6mm, 9mm, 12mm internal installation only. Tested to BS EN 1365-1:2012. Always ensure products are suitable for your specific project. Fixing Guidance

The fibre cement backer board installation guide highlights typical use by thickness, including:

  • 6mm: overboarding plasterboard or plaster, timber floor overlays, and ceilings
  • 9mm: stud walls
  • 12mm: stud walls, exterior use and fire surrounds
  • 18mm: flooring and installations with underfloor heating systems

Boards are easy to work with when cut using the correct method for the thickness. 6mm and 9mm boards can be scored and snapped, while thicker boards should be cut using a circular saw set up to reduce dust.

It is not recommended to cut boards with a dry saw due to dust emission. When cutting boards, always wear protective eyewear and ensure safety gloves are worn whenever handling.

For tiling projects and general installation, you can use rapid-set flexible adhesive, countersunk screws, and backer tape.

Customer Collection Notice

Please ensure you have pre-booked your collection slot before travelling to site.

When arriving to collect your order, please report to a member of our Warehouse Team who will register your arrival and locate your goods. Once ready, your items will be picked and brought to your vehicle loading area.

During busy periods, there may be a short wait while our yard team assist other customers or complete other loading tasks. We always do our best to work within your booked collection time.

We respectfully draw your attention to the following important points:

  • Loading is ultimately the customer’s responsibility. While our team can assist with mechanical loading using forklifts, we cannot handball items into enclosed vehicles. Customers must ensure their vehicle is suitable and that goods are safely loaded and adequately secured before leaving the premises.
  • Sharp sheeting, metal goods, and long/heavy items may pose additional handling risks. Please come prepared with high-quality protective gloves, and any appropriate protection materials to avoid damage to your vehicle or restraints (e.g. ropes or straps). The edges of roofing sheets and metal products can be extremely sharp, and care should be taken when handling.
  • We strongly recommend that customers bring their own straps, ropes, or other securing materials, as we are unable to provide these at the point of collection.
  • If you are unsure of your vehicle’s load capacity, we can advise the approximate weight of your order in advance. It is your responsibility to ensure your vehicle is suitable for transporting the goods safely and legally.
  • Cladco will not be held liable for any damage to your vehicle or goods once they have been loaded and leave our premises. Loading assistance is provided entirely at the customer’s own risk.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fibre cement backer boards have excellent water-resistant properties, meaning that these boards last much longer than ply or plaster alternatives. Fibre cement boards give a suitable, even surface for tiling onto and can be used for covering up damp-prone areas or uneven walls/floors.

When working with fibre cement boards, it is important to wear safety gloves when cutting, moving, and handling the boards.

Please note: due to the fibre cement material, it is advised that when cutting boards, a dust mask is worn. Remove any residue or dust with a dampened cloth to avoid particles from entering the air. 6mm and 9mm boards can be cut to size using a scoring knife or blade and a straight edge. For 12mm and 18mm boards, we recommend cutting the thicker fibre cement backer boards on a bench using a circular saw that has been fixed with a vacuum extractor and filter. This will make for a clean, straight line whilst reducing the amount of dust in the surrounding air.

As a multi-use product, fibre cement backer boards can be fitted under tiling, onto walls, as replacement floorboards, fitted directly onto cement floors, as ceiling boards, or as a fire surround for fireplaces.

Fibre cement backer boards are multi‑use and can be installed in a wide range of applications, depending on board thickness. Please note that all boards used in flooring installations must be laid in a brick‑bond (staggered) pattern to prevent four corners meeting at one point.

6mm boards are commonly used on concrete floors, as their slim profile won’t raise floor levels and helps deliver a squeak‑free finish. Fix 6mm boards directly to the concrete subfloor using a flexible adhesive or polymer‑enriched thin‑set mortar. Allow at least 24 hours to set before screwing into place. Seal joints by applying thin‑set mortar over mesh tape using a smooth putty knife.

9mm and 12mm boards are recommended for wall installations, with thickness chosen based on the application. For stud walls or high‑traffic areas such as corridors, 12mm boards are preferred due to their increased strength and improved sound‑reducing properties. Secure them using screws and washers positioned at least 20mm from the board edges. For solid walls, 9mm boards are recommended and can be fixed using a flexible rapid‑set adhesive, then mechanically secured once set.

18mm fibre cement boards are best suited to new‑build floors and underfloor heating systems. Their increased thickness provides improved strength, sound insulation, and thermal performance. They can be installed directly onto joists as floorboards and offer greater stability than timber‑based alternatives, with minimal risk of movement.

Fibre cement backer boards are a multi-use product and can be installed on walls, ceilings, and floors, including under tiling. They can also be used around fireplaces (as a fire surround/backer) and in other areas where a stable, moisture-resistant board is needed.

Fibre cement backer boards are manufactured from a combination of cellulose fibres and cement mix, making them a non-combustible A1 fire-resistant material and ideal for use around fireplaces.

Perfect for Smaller Spaces and Tiling Jobs!

I purchased the Cladco 1.2m Fibre Cement Backer Board for a kitchen backsplash project, and it was exactly what I needed. The size was perfect for working in a smaller area, and the boards were easy to cut and fit into tight spaces. They provided a smooth, stable base for tiling, and I love that they’re water-resistant, so I don’t have to worry about moisture damage over time. The board's fire-rated properties also made it an ideal choice for use around the stove, giving me added safety and peace of mind. Installation was a breeze using rapid-set adhesive and screws, and the boards feel much more durable than plaster alternatives. Overall, a fantastic product for anyone tackling a small to medium-sized project. Highly recommend!
